Plato said “Wise men speak because they have something to say: Fools because they have to say something.” This quote helps to provide insight as to the wisdom of coaching.
Coaching, really effective, results driven coaching is all about not speaking. Excellent coaches realise that coachee has the answer within himself or herself.
Years ago one of my coaches defined wisdom as “learning through the mistakes of others” while “knowledge is learning through one’s own mistakes.”
Good coaches have made plenty of their own mistakes (knowledge) and have listened and hopefully have gained wisdom through the mistakes others have made. Possibly this is why good coaches have coaches?
