In coaching there is a whirlwind of discussion around professional standards for coaching (see the October 2016 issue of Worldwide Coaching Magazine). Yet there is far less focus on the standards for psychometric assessments and how those standards support the coaching process.
Since a standard is a level of quality, then it truly makes sense to ensure psychometric assessments have that element present. Without quality (how something is measured against others things), the results of any assessment can generate inaccurate results.
One of my colleagues and coaches, George Richardson, has often stated that any consultant or executive coach who prescribes solutions without using proven diagnostic psychometric assessments is committing malpractice.
Just as physicians have their Hippocratic Oath of “first, do no harm,” we as executive coaches must remember also first do no harm.
