Over 50 years ago, Laurence J. Peter and Raymond Hull introduced the world to the concept of the Peter Principle in a humoristic story about bureaucratic organisations.

Their simple observation suggested within a hierarchy people tend to rise to their level of incompetence.

To avoid this still observed behaviour may require a shift in mindset by those who desire to move their careers forward.  They may have to be more of a salesperson who employs the pull model of sales instead of the traditional push one.
