What is Coaching?

In this edition, we revisit some basic questions coaching professionals are often asked:

  • What is coaching and how does it work?
  • How does coaching differ from therapy?
  • What are the main constructs of good, solid coaching?

The four tools I share below are some of my favorite methods for answering such questions. I hope you find them as useful as I do.

What is coaching? Smith Leadership created this clever little clip to explain it clearly and concisely:

How does coaching work? This animated video from Margaret (Meg) Moore’s team at Wellcoaches is quickly becoming a classic way to answer this question.

How does one know when to coach and when to refer a client to therapy? When faced with such a dilemma, I find this article (read here) by Patrick Williams, Ed.D. MCC, extremely useful.

And quite honestly, the ICF (International Coach Federation) does a bang-up job answering any questions regarding the constructs of a strong coaching practice. Reviewing the ICF Core Competencies (read here) is something I do at least twice a year.
